Fruits & Vegetables

New Zealand's cuisine combines British influences with native Maori dishes. A wide variety of native fruits and vegetables are available in New Zealand, including kiwifruit and kumara, a root vegetable somewhat like a sweet potato. Fish and shellfish are plentiful, and New Zealanders with a taste for fish also enjoy muttonbird, a bird that tastes like fish. There is a wide variety of cooking techniques in New Zealand; a Maori speciality is the hangi, a pit in which meats or fish are cooked with vegetables. The pavlova, a meringue filled with whipped cream and fresh fruit named in honor of the Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova, is a popular dessert that was invented in New Zealand.
Some Fruits:
Kiwi: This looks like the chickoo but inside its green & has tiny seeds. The outer skin is brown & furry, somewhat like a peach.
Mandarins: Its similar in taste & colour like the Indian orange, but too small in size.
Orange: The colour is orange but its taste & looks are similar to that of the sweetlime. They are big in size.
Rock Melon: It’s the same as mash melon.
Vegetables:
Okra is the ladys’ finger, the Egg plant is the brinjal, Telegraph Cucumber is the dark green cucumber & the Kumara is the sweetpotato. Lemon is big in size & looks similar to the sweetlime.
Some of the fruits & vegetables can be grown in one's own garden, as each house is a big bungalow & has a big lawn around it. Most of the people grow some of the fruits & vegetables for their daily use. Some of the fruits grown at home are grapes, bananas, mandarins, oranges & strawberries. The vegetables grown at home are broccoli, silver beet, lemon, spinach, spring onions, tomatoes, potatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce & some of the herbs are basil leaves, mint, coriander & some other. All of these can be grown as the seeds & saplings are easily available in the supermarkets. Large scale production of fruits & vegetables are done in farms which are located in the distant areas.
